Little Foxes Spoil the Vine

Great issues arise out of small things! The old adage is true, that from little acorns great oaks grow. Another proverb states, a stitch in time saves nine. David’s small pebble felled Goliath, the giant. Samson slew thousands with the jawbone of an ass, but then had his hair cut which reduced him to a weakling. Little things have great consequences.

Consider the Nicene Creed. It was written in the sixth century at the council called to oppose Arianism. But it eventually became the source of a massive controversy. And the furore was caused by three little words! The original creed spoke of, the Holy Ghost who proceedeth from the Father”. But the Latin Western Church, later added, “who proceedeth from the Father and the Son”. And that caused the rupture between the Western Churches, and what is now called the Eastern Orthodox Church. Three little words, that have divided Chtistendom for over a thousand years.
Little foxes spoil the vines, and little actions or words sometimes ruin the testimony of a Christian or a church.
